Using IoT with JD Edwards condition-based alerts

The IoT Orchestrator (and new Orchestrator Studio with version 9.2.0.2) is available with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne version 9.1.5 onwards. The Orchestrator allows you to create Condition-Based Alerts. These follow rules that automatically create corrective work orders to address defects on assets.

Alerts are triggered by transmitting data from the ‘thing’. This is networked device which can be attached to, and perform monitoring on, the asset (such as a sensor) The data transmits via the internet, into JD Edwards — which then creates a response to the data.

While this is a great innovation, the actual burden for asset intensive industries is the creation and maintenance of tolerance and threshold rules for every asset that’s subject to maintenance.

Bypassing the burden of managing assets

My team was challenged by a major organisation to manage the tens of thousands of assets they use to deliver services to the public.

Each individual and group of assets had specific tolerances. This meant applying threshold rules accurately to trigger a work order, as and when maintenance was needed.

We created new processes that allow the user-friendly creation of tolerance rules and required responses at the asset category level.

The solution also caters for any rules applying to a specific asset. We developed defect analysis processes that analyse the severity of the issue and the class of asset. If the rules match the situation, an accurate work order is automatically generated to fix the asset.

How it helps you

This is especially valuable for an organisation that requires linear asset management, as the solution can create accurate corrective work orders at specific points of failure. For companies that have thousands of assets spread over an enormous area, this level of accuracy is essential to allow the defect to be quickly located and rectified. It speeds up maintenance, ensures compliance with regulations and allows for the efficient scheduling of work crews. For the public, this delivers improved customer service, and of course, ensures both people and assets are safe.

As an added bonus, the solution was made without any changes to standard JD Edwards objects, safeguarding it against any future software changes in a client’s ERP system.

In summary

IoT can provide significant benefits to asset intensive organisations. And with new technology come the new challenges we love to take on.

The solutions we put in place are not just for ‘the now’. We work closely with our customers to develop solutions which are scalable, repeatable and easy to update.
