As a GTO, it’s natural to maintain a heavy focus on the operational aspects of running your organisation. It’s crucial to be efficient, effective and compliant.

However, it’s just as important to build deeper relationships with your host employers. Without them, you have no business.

It’s a constant struggle to keep track of both large and small employers and to understand what their needs are. And like it or not, you can’t manage these relationships in Outlook, Excel or as I’ve even seen done - out of someone’s diary.

So, what do you need to help keep host employers happy?

Most platforms designed for the GTO industry are specifically focused on managing the day-to-day operations of the business, so that’s great. But not all platforms help you stay in regular contact with your host employers and ensure that they’re happy with the services you’re providing.

The guys out on the road should be able to get a complete overview of the host employer as they walk into the meeting, from the details of the apprentices they have, through to any historical issues or past concerns. Knowing if there have been any OH&S issues or anything that’s impacting the host employer’s business is vital. Having this data at their fingertips and on their preferred mobile device is going to make their life immeasurably easier and ensure that their meeting with the host employer is insightful and engaging.
